Yi Liu is a lyric coloratura soprano whose performances have taken her across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Her operatic roles include Mimì (La bohème) with Opera Aeterna in Chicago, Violetta (La traviata) in Italy, and Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw) with The Ohio State University Opera Theatre. Upcoming engagements include Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) with Camerata Bardi in New York and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) with Camerata Bardi in Sulmona, Italy. A winner of The Ohio State University Concerto Competition, she will perform Strauss’s Brentano Lieder with the OSU Symphony Orchestra this fall.
She has appeared at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre, and has performed in concert with Bryn Terfel as part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. She was also featured in a solo recital at the Shanghai Concert Hall as part of the 39th Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.
A prizewinner in international competitions, Liu has received First Prize at the Nightingale Opera Theatre Biennial Vocal Competition, Third Prize at the AIMS Meistersinger Vocal Competition in Graz, and Second Prize at the John Alexander National Vocal Competition. She has participated in the Accademia Verdiana di Parma in New York and the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) Young Artist Program in Graz.
She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at The Ohio State University. She holds degrees from the Conservatorio di Musica “Giuseppe Verdi” di Milano and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and is fluent in Italian, Chinese, English, and Korean.
Her repertoire centers on lyric coloratura roles, grounded in bel canto technique, with a particular affinity for Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini.
